Pleasant Valley Productions Presents Sondheim's Company

July 7, 2014 at 5:21 PM

WEST ORANGE, NJ - West Orange-based community theatre company, Pleasant Valley Productions, will present Stephen Sondheim’s Company July 17-20 at Luna Stage in West Orange. The production is directed by West Orange resident Elizabeth Rogers, with music direction by Ilene Greenbaum. The show is produced by West Orange native Camille Vecchio-DiLorenzo, Ilene Greenbaum, and Howie Tilkin.

Company tells the story of confirmed bachelor Robert, as he contemplates his unmarried state on the evening of his 35th birthday. Over the course of a series of dinners, drinks, and even a wedding, his friends - "those good and crazy people my married friends" - explain the pros and cons of taking on a spouse. The habitually single Robert is forced to question his adamant retention of bachelorhood during a hilarious, yet accurate, array of interactions. This in-depth character study piece by Stephen Sondheim and George Furth includes a score with such classics as "Being Alive", "Ladies Who Lunch", and "Marry Me a Little.”

Over the past two years, Pleasant Valley Productions has presented a number of acclaimed community theatre shows in the area with productions of Songs for A New World, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dream, a sold-out production of The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee last summer, and most recently, a celebrated production of Ragtime.  The company’s mission is to create a professional theatre experience for local area performers, audience members, students and volunteers while providing a broad range of musical theatre works with the highest possible production value. They have continued to grow their company’s presence in the community by offering free concerts at the West Orange Public Library as well as an after-school musical theatre enrichment program at Roosevelt Middle School.

Performances of Company will be presented Thursday, July 17 through Saturday, July 19 at 8pm with matinees on Saturday, July 19 and Sunday, July 20 at 2pm.  Performances will be at Luna Stage, located at 555 Valley Road, West Orange, NJ 07052.  All tickets are $20. Let’s make America the Greatest Show on Earth Again.

I was very sad to learn that after 146 years of big-top entertainment the Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey Circus is folding its tent and leaving town.

This comes a year after the circus, due to mounting pressures from animal rights activists, got rid of the elephants.
