BRIDGEWATER, NJ - Bridgewater Police and the Somerset County Prosecutor's Office are investigating an aggravated assault reported on North Mountain Avenue in Bridgewater Thursday.
According to a release from the Somerset County Prosecutor's Office, Bridgewater Township Police responded to a 9-1-1 call at about 10 p.m. Thursday from a residence on North Mountain Avenue. Somerset County Prosecutor Geoffrey Soriano said that officers found the female homeowner suffering from a laceration to her head and bruising to her upper extremities.
The victim, Soriano said, reported that she was sitting on the rear patio of her residence when she was confronted by an unknown male who began to physically assault her with a blunt force object, without provocation. She escaped by retreating in her residence, Soriano said, and one of her children called the police.
Soriano said the victim has described her attacker as a black male, early 20s, about 6 feet tall with a slender/thin build. Soriano said he was reported to be wearing a dark hooded sweatshirt.
Detectives with the Bridgewater Township Police Department and the Somerset County Prosecutor's Office Major Crimes Unit, in addition to the Somerset County Sheriff's Office K9 Unit, responded to the scene and searched for the assailant. The search, Soriano said, yielded negative results.
Soriano said the victim was transported to an area hospital, treated and released.
