The group's motto is “We ride for those who died.” According to their website, the primary purpose of the Police Unity Tour is to "raise awareness of law enforcement officers who have died in the line of duty." The secondary goal is to raise funds for the National Law Enforcement Officer’s Memorial Fund.
The National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial is centered in the 400 block of E Street, NW, Washington, DC and is the nation’s monument to law enforcement officers who have died in the line of duty.

The Police Unity Tour was organized in May, 1997 in Florham Park, NJ. Over four days, eighteen bicycle riders rode from Florham Park to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial in Washington, DC. The fundraising tour raised over $18,000. By 2012, the movement had spread across the country with over 1600 riders; in total they have raised more than $12 million. Because of their generosity, the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund has selected the organization to be the sponsor of the soon to be built Museum’s Hall of Remembrance.
