February 22, 2013 at 6:11 PM

Premier Health Associates, the area’s most comprehensive medical group, is pleased to announce the addition of George C. Wang, M.D., Ph.D., a specialist in geriatric medicine and internal medicine, to its staff.

Dr. Wang received his education, including clinical fellowships in geriatric medicine and gerontology, at UMDNJ and the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. Dr. Wang also received his doctorate in clinical investigation from Johns Hopkins, and he served as an assistant professor of medicine there in his field. He is board certified in geriatric medicine and internal medicine.

A recipient of multiple National Institutes of Health clinical research grants, Dr. Wang is an alumnus scholar of the T. Franklin Williams Research Scholars Award/American Geriatrics Society and of the John A. Hartford Foundation’s Center of Excellence in Geriatric Medicine.

As a geriatrician, Dr. Wang specializes in diagnosing, preventing, and managing diseases and conditions that affect people as they age. His expertise encompasses geriatric syndromes, dementia, and the everyday challenges that older people can encounter, and supports their goals for aging well, for living independently, and for keeping up with the activities they like. For older adults, simply figuring out how to coordinate the increasing number of medicines they may need can be overwhelming. Geriatricians like Dr. Wang are there to help people successfully navigate their day-to-day lives so that they can continue to be rewarding and productive.

Dr. Wang began his position at Premier Health Associates at the start of this year, and also serves the community as the medical director of the Sussex County Department of Human Services’ Transitional Care Program. In that capacity, he leads a dedicated team of health care practitioners in developing and implementing innovative ways to deliver health care to older adults, with the goal of improving their quality of life.  Among other organizations, he is also a member of the Sussex County Division of Senior Services Advisory Board.

The president of Premier Health Associates, Dave Bollard, D.O., stated, “In keeping with our commitment to offer the highest quality medical care to our older adults locally, we are proud to offer the services of Dr. Wang. His excellence highlights our commitment to keeping our patients healthy and at home in Sussex County for all their health care needs.” Dr. Bollard, whose field is family medicine, also serves as the medical director of the Valley View Care Center, a facility for older adults.

The care of older adults — as with caring for patients through all stages of life — is of high priority to Premier Health, as evidenced by other doctors in the practice who are also medical directors at facilities for older adults, including Andover Subacute and Rehabilitation Center, Bristol Glen, and Homestead Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center. It is estimated that almost 15 percent of the more than 207,000 residents in Sussex and Pike counties are older adults. With the addition of another highly credentialed physician, Premier Health Associates is well-positioned to serve their needs.

About his recent appointment to the staff of Premier Health Associates, Dr. Wang says, “I am delighted and excited to join the progressively-minded physicians at Premier Health Associates. As a geriatrician, I provide primary care services for older adults in the office and long-term care settings, and offer consultations for geriatric syndromes, including memory impairment, falls, osteoporosis, incontinence, and chronic pain. A geriatrician is particularly attuned to the interactions between multiple medications and age-related changes in the body, and specializes in managing and coordinating care of complex age-related conditions and keeping older adults living independently in the community. I value a holistic approach to the care of older adults that focuses on promoting health and successful aging and preventing disease, and I champion a comprehensive strategy of managing chronic conditions that includes education and empowerment of patients, family members, and caregivers.”

With “the comfort of collaborative care” as its guiding principle, Premier Health Associates was recently formed by the merger of Sussex County Medical Associates and Sparta Medical Associates. The group offers its patients an excellent primary care network with seamless access to highly trained specialists in the areas of cardiology, gastroenterology, rheumatology, endocrinology, pulmonology, general and colorectal surgery, sleep medicine, pain management, geriatrics, occupational medicine, podiatry, pediatrics, cosmetic dermatology, chiropractic care and physical medicine and rehabilitation.

Dr. Wang is located at the Premier Health office in Sparta at 89 Sparta Avenue, and has privileges at Homestead Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center, Barn Hill Care Center, and Andover Subacute and Rehabilitation Center, as well as hospital privileges at Newton Medical Center and St. Claire’s Hospital in Denville.  The Sparta Avenue office is open seven days; appointments can be made by calling 973-729-2121.  For more information visit Premier Health Associates online at www.mypremierdoctors.com.

According to The New York Times, “Opioid addiction is America’s 50-state epidemic.”  ...
