SPRINGFIELD, N.J. - The ace of the Dayton pitching staff showed why he holds that distinction on Tuesday.
Senior Vinny Pulice pitched a complete game one-hitter with 10 strikeouts and three walks to lift Dayton to a 2-0 victory over Roselle Park at Ruby Field in Springfield.
Pulice improved his record to 3-0 on the season and helped Dayton (5-2) to its fourth straight win.

Senior Aidan Elgrably provided all of the Dayton offense in the bottom of the first inning with a two-run double, scoring juniors Zach Gelo and Tommy Saverino.
“I think this is a big step because pitching and defense wins you a lot of games, and hitting doesn't in the bigger games," said Dayton head coach Michael Abbate. "So this is a huge win for us against a good conference team, and hopefully, we can just keep building off it. We've got another big game on Thursday that we need to be ready for.”
Abbate added, “I thought Vinny obviously was a dominant player on the mound, and he pretty much won the game for us singlehandedly, but our catcher behind the plate, who has caught every game, came up with a big hit.
"You don't know when the big hit is going to occur, it could come in the first inning or the last inning, and the big hit was in the first inning, with Aidan [Elgrably]. That was a big double there to get us in the scoring column.”
Gelo and senior Jacob Pereira each had a single apiece for Dayton. The Bulldogs begin a three-game road trip on Thursday, starting with Linden (1-6), losers of two straight games, at 4:00 p.m.
After a week off, a visit to Barringer in Newark awaits on Thursday, April 25, also at 4:00 p.m. and then a trip to neighboring Summit on Monday, April 29 marks the lone night game of the year, with first pitch scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
"This team is getting better every day, and there's a lot of good kids that aren't getting what they want that are on the bench, that are cheering and being supportive," Abbate said. "I think that's really something that is important. They really buy in, especially from the seniors. That's something special and that's what I enjoy being around every single day.”
