SUMMIT, NJ - Five Junior Members of the Summit Volunteer First Aid Squad -- Margaret Burd, Emily Donohue, Brendan Kaelin, Catherine Mennig, Margaret Burd, and Alexandra Pohl -- are recipients if this year’s Alice Nichols Memorial Scholarship.

Donohue, Kaelin and Mennig graduated from Summit High School, while Burd and Pohl both graduated from Oak Knoll.

The fund was established in memory of Nichols, a longtime squad member who passed away unexpectedly in 2000. She had been an active volunteer for more than 30 years and was serving as the squad’s President at the time of her death.

She had also served for many years as a mentor to many of the Squad's Junior members. The scholarship is funded through private contributions and benefits graduating high school seniors who plan to attend college.

Pohl was also a recipient of the New Jersey State EMS Council Cadet Scholarship, which benefits high school seniors who serve as EMS volunteers. She completed her training and state certification as an Emergency Medical Technician last summer, and plans to continue to serve as an EMS volunteer at the Drexel Campus First Aid Squad.

The all-volunteer First Aid Squad is always looking for new members to join its ranks. All needed training, uniforms and equipment is provided. For information, call 908-277-9479, or visit summitems.org.
