NUTLEY, NJ - A TAPinto Nutley reader stumbled on a race-based graffiti in Essex County Yanticaw Park while walking with her twins on Monday afternoon. The chalk message also used a slang term for the police.

Shortly after the message was discovered, the Nutley Police Department was alerted to the message and its contents.

The first portion of the chalk message, I hate N*ggers" is easily understood. The second part, f*ck the 12" uses a slang term that means "the police."

Our newsletter delivers the local news that you can trust.

The origin of the link between "12" and the police is not entirely clear. Some urban folklorists believe it to be a reference to the 1960s/ 1970s Los Angeles based police drama "Adam-12." Others believe the term comes from those involved in illegal drug trade, still others believe it comes from the police code "10-12." Whatever the origins, "the 12" is a reference to the police."

This is a developing story. TAPinto will share any additional details should they become known.
