ROXBURY, NJ - (Updated 5:50 p.m.)The center of Route 46 at a spot in Kenvil was pushed up into a large bump Thursday afternoon, a pavement heave in the area of a natural gas feeder line, according to workers on the scene.
The incident, between Dell Avenue and 2nd Street, required officials to detour eastbound Route 46 traffic so repairs could be made.
The large bump, directly under the center of the road, was one of two disturbances to the highway surface in the area. Another section nearby was also damaged.
The DOT employee said the problems were likely related to heavy rainfall that took place Wednesday evening into Thursday morning. He said the road had previously been disturbed when a new gas feeder line was installed, but he did not believe the situation posed any gas-related danger.
The bulge in the pavement appeared to grow larger throughout the day, according to one resident who said it was there during her morning commute at about 8:30 a.m. Representatives from New Jersey Natural Gas arrived at the scene shortly before 2 p.m.
