RANDOLPH, NJ - The Randolph East 9U All-Stars outlasted Morristown National, 10-9, in six innings on Friday to capture the Mendham Little League postseason tournament baseball championship.
Randolph East got its bats going early, scoring five runs in the first inning to grab a lead they would never relinquish. Starting pitcher Sean Garbarini got the victory for Randolph East, allowing four runs in three innings of work while striking out 6.
Leadoff batter Mitch McKechnie tripled and scored on a throwing error to start the scoring. The squad would score four more runs in the inning. Danny Kaiser walked and scored, and AJ Cacciacarne, Devon Sawyer, and Mikey Paladino all singled and scored. Will Iuzzolino had an RBI single and James Kratochvil singled in two runs during the frame.
Randolph East was not done scoring yet. In the fourth inning Randolph East added four more runs on RBI singles by Sawyer, Paladino and Joey Dasti that helped break the game open. Danny Kaiser then knocked in the 10th run, which later in the game would turn out to be the all important game winning run.
In the bottom of the sixth inning, Morristown put together a furious rally to close the score to 10-9. Pitcher Mitch McKechnie ended the rally by striking out the final batter of the game with the tying run on third base.
Other players who contributed to Randolph East's championship season were Johnny Hager, Chris Sebastian and Max Boyko. The team finished the summer with an 11-3 record.
The team was managed by Joe Dasti, who was assisted by Dave Mcketchnie and Mark Cacciacarne, and their bench coach was Mike Paladino. Randolph East 9U defeated Denville, 7-1, on Wednesday, July 30 to advance to the championship game against top-seeded Morristown National. Both Denville and Morristown National had beaten Randolph East during the regular season.
