RANDOLPH,NJ- Straight off of its' season opening victory, the Randolph High School Boys Tennis Team saw mixed results in its match against Delbarton this afternoon.
Delbarton defeated the Varsity team in all of the singles and doubles matches. It was a tough loss for Varsity, according to Team Co-Captain and first singles player Mitchel Sanders, who was struggling with a hip flexor injury. Sanders described the loss as “hard” on the heels of the team's decisive victory over West Morris Central in Tuesday’s match.
Nonetheless, Sanders is hopeful about the team’s prospects when it hosts Delbarton later this season. “We’ve struggled against Delbarton in the past, and today we were pretty close to getting a couple of wins,” said Sanders. “We’re gaining a little bit on them,” he said, referring to Delbarton as the top team in the conference. Sanders also sees “a lot of potential” in this year’s squad.
JV pulled out the win when second doubles team Seth Appel and Harry Kern won their third set 7-5. Kern described Delbarton as, “A very hard hitting team with very strategic players.” After losing the second set, Kern said that he and Appel realized that they “had to adapt," and they did. "We started seeing formations, loosened up and followed Coach Lit’s advice to be more aggressive,” he added. Kern considered the pivotal point of match to be when he and his partner brought the third set back to 5 all.
It was only after the match concluded that the pair learned that their match would determine the win for Randolph. JV doubles teams Kevin Leary-Nick Dzerovych and Owen Spellman-Devan Bulsara contributed to the victory by winning their matches.
First singles Varsity player Mitchel Sanders went 6-4, 0-6, 0-6 against Delbarton’s #1 singles player. Second singles Justin Gold went down in straight sets, 0-6, 1-6 and 3rd singles Eric Kaden lost 4-6, 2-6.
Varsity first doubles Noah Seligson and Cooper Seligson lost 4-6, 1-6; Varsity second doubles Coby Levine and Stefan Luong lost 4-6, 6-3, 4-6.
First JV doubles Daniel Liew and Josh Steinfink lost 4-6, 5-7; second doubles Seth Appel and Harry Kern won 6-4, 4-6, 7-5; third doubles Chris Tassillo and Andrew Schlusberg lost 4-6, 5-7; fourth doubles Kevin Leary and Nick Dzerovych won 6-1, 6-4; and fifth doubles Owen Spellman and Devan Bulsara, won 7-6, 6-2.
