RANDOLPH, NJ - Families set up lawn chairs and blankets in the grass in front of library’s gazebo to enjoy the weather and free sounds of the first of the library's free summer concerts.
Monday night, “The Homegrown String Band” was the first to perform for the summer series concerts that will continue through August 18. The library has been hosting the small summer concerts for about 10 years said library director, Anita Freeman.
The concerts started in the early 2000s. The library pays for select music groups and bands that perform all around country to come and have mini concerts in the grass yard behind the library for residents.
“It’s really aimed at adults, although families are welcomed. Some people dance, that’s fun to see,” said Freeman.
The music selections range from jazz to swing to american roots music like the band that performed monday night. Although most of the music is targeted towards adults, plenty of children were out to enjoy the entertainment as well.
The Homegrown String Band is a family musical group of four; a father, wife and two daughters that started 17 years ago. They performed a series of american roots songs and originals by themselves. The whole family is very musically inclined and played multiple instruments including the banjo, mandolin, harmonica, guitar, fiddle, doumbek and jawharp while singing.
People of all ages brought snacks and enjoyed the beautiful weather and music. Frequent attender Chris Groh said she and her husband come every Monday if they can. “It’s a fun night out, we’ve come in the rain, we’ve come in thunderstorms. Usually none of the bands are familiar to me and I just come and enjoy, open to the experience and listening to different kinds of music.”
The concerts will continue almost every Monday until August 18 at the library’s gazebo. The shows start at 7 p.m. rain or shine. Those attending are encouraged to bring lawn chairs or blankets to sit on.
The next show will be this Monday evening at 7 p.m. staring the Charlie Jones Trio, “An electric mix of tunes popular from the 1940’s and the 1970’s.”
