Randolph Recreation Offers Education to Parents and Coaches on Safety/Concussions

February 13, 2014 at 2:23 PM

RANDOLPH,NJ- Randolph Township Recreation Department is offering two Educational/Training Programs for any parent of athletes and current or perspective coach.  We are hoping to give parents and coaches the tools and training they need for their children to have successful experiences relative to youth sports.  In addition to these programs all the sports committees offer resources to their coaches to help with their coaching experiences.

The first program is the Rutgers S.A.F.E.T.Y. Clinic:  March 18th; check in at 6:30 pm the program begins promptly at 6:45pm.

On May 12, 1986, New Jersey became the first state in the nation to pass legislation which protects volunteer athletic coaches, managers, and officials from lawsuits. Commonly referred to as the "Little League Law" (2A:62A-6 et. seq.), this legislation extends partial civil immunity to volunteers who have attended a "safety orientation and training skills program."

Since 1986, the Youth Sports Research Council, in cooperation with the New Jersey Recreation and Park Association (NJRPA) has trained more than 200,000 volunteer coaches in New Jersey.

In accordance with the stipulations in the Little League Law, the Rutgers S.A.F.E.T.Y. Clinic:

helps coaches minimize the risk of injury to young athletes

provides information about fundamental coaching concepts which enhances volunteer coaches' effectiveness

protects volunteer coaches from civil lawsuits

Individuals attending the Rutgers S.A.F.E.T.Y. Clinic receive:

The Coaches' Reference Manual (4th edition)

The Rutgers S.A.F.E.T.Y. Clinic Certification Card

Permanent registration with YSRC (.3 CEU)

The cost of this program is $15.00 for Randolph Residents and $35.00 for non residents.  All participants must be pre-registered.

The second program is a:  CONCUSSION SEMINAR, March 25th from 7:00-9:00pm.

This seminar is for all volunteer youth coaches and interested parents in Randolph.  Over the last couple of years Concussions have become a hot topic from the youth level to the pro level in ALL sports across the country.  We STRONGLY recommend that you attend this VERY Important seminar.

The seminar will be presented by the Center for Concussion Care and Physical Rehabilitation at Overlook Hospital (Part of the Atlantic Health Network).

This program is open to Randolph Residents only and is free.  Pre-registration is required.

To register for either of these programs, please go to the Randolph Recreation’s Community Pass on line registration program.  The programs are listed under the season of 2014 Coaches.

When Good Enough, Isn't

“Good enough is the death of greatness.”

I fell in love with this quote when I first heard it because it rings so true in sports and in life. Being a competitive athlete it is easy to fall into this trap of making some progress, seeing some success and then getting satisfied. When that feeling starts to sink in think about how many times in the course of a game or season good ...
