Red Cross Sets Date for Annual "Run for the Red 5K"

August 14, 2013 at 7:10 AM

MILLBURN, NJ – The American Red Cross North Jersey Region announced that the date for its annual 5K Run and Walk will be Dec. 8. Timed to be held on the same day as Millburn’s Snowflake Parade, the  “Run For the Red 5K” is looking to attract the largest participation of runners and sponsors ever.

Registration will be open soon. Runners and walkers will be able to participate individually, or as part of a group or team. The race will follow an out-and-back route beginning and ending at the Millburn Public Library, heading past the Paper Mill Playhouse and into the South Mountain Reservation.

“This will be a USA Track and Field sanctioned event,” said the Red Cross’s Sylvia Sirin. “Usually, they do not sanction events after the first weekend in December, but they have made an exception for the Run for the Red 2013.”

Funds raised by the race will go to support the mission of the Red Cross in the North Jersey Region. Barry and Pat O’Brien will be the event co-chairs and are looking forward to wider participation this year.

“With the Red Cross’s reorganization into regions, we are expanding the reach of this year’s Run for the Red beyond its Millburn-Short Hills origins,” said Barry O’Brien. “We are looking for support from both participants and sponsors from all the surrounding communities. It’s going to be a special day.”
