LIVINGSTON, NJ - On Tuesday, Nov. 12, the Livingston Chamber of Commerce held a Ribbon Cutting Ceremony for Dieci Uomo – Salon for Men at 48 West Northfield Rd., and officially opened its doors for business. The salon, which is the brainchild of owners’ Marie and Paul Gagliotti, who also own Dieci Lifestyle Spa at 90 West Mt. Pleasant Ave. is the first full-service men’s salon in New Jersey, and will soon be the first LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Silver-certified salon in the state.
“It was our dream to build a green eco-friendly building and we are thrilled that the day has finally come to open the doors,” said Marie Gagliotti.
“It is Men’s Health Month,” said Beth Lippman, who heads up Livingston’s BID. “And what better way is there to celebrate Men’s Health Month than with the opening of an exclusive men’s salon?”
“They did a beautiful job here,” added Lippman. “This building is part of the effort to build up this part of Livingston with businesses that will support the community and local economy.”
“It is always nice to see a new business developed in town and it is especially great when an existing business wants to expand to a new location,” said Mayor Rudy Fernandez. “And, what’s more impressive in this instance is the thought and planning that went into building a LEED Sliver-certified facility because it shows not only a commitment to Livingston but to the environment too.”
“In New Jersey, we deal with so many existing buildings because there isn’t much more land to develop,” said Architect, Justin A. Mihalik, AIA NCARB. “This project is an example of taking a building that has seen better days and converting it into an attractive building that will bring more business into the town.”
Dieci Uomo, which translates from Italian as the Dieci Man, offers a modern, masculine, sustainable, healthy, innovative and exclusive grooming environment for men. Services include: haircutting and hair color services, hot shaves, hand and foot grooming, waxing, facials and massages. Six month and 12-month Memberships, which may include: unlimited haircuts, express manicures, shoe shines, and discounts, are also available.
The Salon, which was designed by Mihalik, follows the standards set by The Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) rating program, which was developed by the U.S. Green Building Council. The LEED program issues points to a registered building project based on a variety of construction practices that are both people and planet friendly. Points are earned in five categories: Sustainable Sites, Water Efficiency, Energy & Atmosphere, Materials & Resources, and Indoor Environmental Quality.
To learn about going ‘green,’ Marie took a course on ‘green’ building based on LEED requirements with her soon-to-be son-in-law, Daniel Staudinger, of Crew Contracting, LLC, who acted as the general contractor for the project, while monitoring all of the ‘green’ requirements.
Below is a partial list of some of the green initiatives embraced by Dieci Uomo:
- All construction debris was separated and recycled.
- All of the sheetrock throughout the facility has the highest recycled content possible and recycled glass and steel countertops have been used where applicable.
- Low or no VOC interior finishes were used throughout the facility.
- The building is tightly insulated with soy-based spray foam insulation.
- The Salon uses a high-performance energy efficient LED lighting system.
- The Salon utilizes highly-efficient HVAC equipment along with high-performance windows and a light-colored rooftop, which reduces the energy needed to control indoor spaces by minimizing heat transfer.
- It has energy-saving hot water tanks and low-flow toilets and sinks to conserve water.
