Rooney, Chase, Byrd Power 8th Graders to 22-22 tie with Sparta

CHATHAM, NJ - Jack Rooney pulled in a 15-yard touchdown catch and Ryan Chase kicked the two-point conversion in the fourth quarter as Chatham rallied for a 22-22 tie with Sparta on Sunday.

A blocked punt led to a TD rush by Sparta for a 22-14 lead late in the fourth quarter before Chatham answered with a drive for its tying points.

After the game was tied by Chatham (2-3-1), Chase picked off a Sparta pass to give the Cougars possession before time ran out.

Chatham took the lead in the first half when Connor Byrd sprinted to a 65-yard touchdown run. Rooney's first of two toiuchdown receptions, which covered 14 yards, staked the Cougars to a 14-8 edge. Sparta made it a 14-14 game at the before intermission.
