Roseland Library Has Plenty of Warmth On Hand in February

ROSELAND, NJ - Come out of the cold and into the warmth of the Roseland Free Public Library.  They have a lot planned for February, and all events are free and open to the public.

Throughout the month of February, Terracotta Portraits, crafted by G.B. Goldberg of Roseland, are on display in the library. The exhibition is free and available for viewing during regular library hours.

Wednesday, Feb. 6 -  Simple Projects for Little Fingers; Wearable Art
Crafty Wednesdays returns and there’s something for everyone! Toddlers and preschoolers, ages 2 and up, will enjoy Simple Projects for Little Fingers from 11:30am to noon. Story times and preschool crafts feature a different theme every week.

Wearable Art is a program available to school age children and older. Kids meet at the library from 3:30pm to 4:30pm. Older kids can create Wearable Art by working on some beaded wearable art. “Projects for bigger fingers,” commented the Library Director, Christopher Lee. Advance registration is not required for these programs, and all are welcome.

Friday, Feb. 8 - African Mask Making and Cultural Workshop
Create, design, and decorate your own African clay mask and learn about the very interesting culture of Africa. Geared for kids from age five to nine, the West African Cultural Program will present song, dance and history. Participants will also create, design, and decorate an African mask. The Workshop will be from 6:30pm to 8pm. The program is free and open to the public, but space is limited so participants are required to register in advance. Call 973-226-8636.

Monday, Feb. 11 - Valentine Card Workshop
So many Valentines, so little time? The library will hold a workshops for making Valentine’s Day cards. Kids can put their creativity to work and create a cherished Valentine keepsake. The event will be held from 3 to 5 pm. No registration necessary; free and open to the public!

Tuesday, Feb. 12  - Simply Stories and Coloring
Families can choose from four different times: 10am, 11am, 2pm, and 3:30pm. The program is free. No advance registration is required; the public is welcome. Story times and preschool crafts feature a different theme every week.

Dust off your remotes and make a date with Wii Winter Wackiness. Kids can challenge friends old and new to a variety of games on the library’s Wii system from 3:30pm to 5pm. This program is free and open to the public, and no pre-registration is required.

Sunday, Feb. 17 - Mardi Gras Celebration
“Save the date, Sunday, Feb. 17!” expressed Lee. “Go for the gold, and green and purple! Join the Roseland Free Public Library in celebrating and learning about Carnival Season with live musical entertainment by Pete Gumbo and the Bayou Ramblers, a magic show, face painting, and traditional New Orleans food. Come in costume or a festive mask at the very least!”

The program runs from 1pm to 5pm, and the band will perform from 2pm to 4pm. The event is free and open to the public, but reservations are required.

The Roseland Book Club will be meeting at 7pm to discuss Jess Walter’s “The Financial Lives of the Poets.”
“It's not too early to start preparing for this month's Book Club meeting,” commented the Librarian. “In this satirical novel, middle-aged Matt Prior is tormented by unemployment, escalating debt, imminent foreclosure, estrangement from his spouse, and caring for his senile father. A chance encounter with hoodlums on a late-night run to a 7-11 makes Matt turn to drug dealing in a desperate attempt to reclaim his life as he knew it. Read and find out what happens! "Bring your smock and a plain old rock and make yourself a unique no-maintenance pet!" commented Lee. The school age appropriate craft event will be held at 3:30pm.
