Roseland Library Hosting West African Workshop for Tweens and Teens

ROSELAND, NJ -The Roseland Free Public Library is looking forward to their upcoming multifaceted West African workshop, geared for ages 10 and up only, on Friday, March 15. Roseland and non-Roseland tweens and teens are welcome to join in this event when classically trained actor Ivy Omére will present West African song, dance and history. Participants will also create, design, and decorate their own African clay mask.

The free program on the West African culture was originally scheduled for Feb. 8 but was postponed due to Winter Storm Nemo. Because of the high demand, the library decided to split the workshop into two separate dates. The first led by Omere, already held, was for ages five to nine and was a great success.

Omére was born and raised in England and is of Nigerian descent. She has presented her workshop throughout London, England, New York and New Jersey. She has studied at the University of London, the Webber Douglas Academy of Dramatic Art and the Frei Uni in Berlin.

  • Clay mask making
  • Greetings in Nigerian languages
  • Songs from Ghana
  • Dances from the Ivory Coast
  • Learning about African Royal Families
  • Why masks were made
  • How to make African decorations

The West African Workshop will be from 5pm to 6:30pm at the library, located at 20 Roseland Avenue, The program is free, but space is limited to 30 participants; children are required to register in advance. Call 973-226-8636 or stop by the circulation desk to sign up.
