ROXBURY, NJ – People are responding well to the “Roxbury Lights of Kindness” board inside the Roxbury Recreation Department office, a way to ensure that children in struggling families get holiday gifts, said Interim Roxbury Recreation Department Director Brett Douglas.

On the board, inside the entrance to the department’s headquarters at Horseshoe Lake Park, are 2-part, pieces of paper designed to look like Christmas tree bulbs. The top layer tells the age and gender of the child and, when turned over, the gift they requested.

Participants take the top portion, buy the gifts requested and deliver them to either the recreation department or to the Roxbury Social Services office nearby.

Making Up for the Missing Walmart

Douglas said the project is an attempt to help children in families being served by Social Services. He noted that the temporary closure of the Ledgewood Walmart store left a need for the Lights of Kindness because the store participated in similar gift-purchase programs during the Christmas season. The store was razed this year in preparation for the construction of a new Walmart Supercenter.

“We were all kind of brainstorming, trying to come up with something to kind of help us have the replacement since Walmart’s not here right now,” he said. “We wanted to have something where people could come and take the light bulbs and give back and donate in that regard. So it worked out perfectly.”

Douglas, on Monday, said the Lights of Kindness board is not only helping unfortunate youngsters but also the recreation department. “It’s given us a little more foot traffic into the office here and into the department,” he said. “People are a little more interactive with the board and I think 17 bulbs are left out of overall number. So, it’s a good thing so far.”

All gifts must be delivered to social services or the recreation department by 1 p.m. on Dec. 16.
