ROXBURY, NJ — Township residents are being asked to participate in a town-wide litter cleanup next month, something that was supposed to happen in the spring but was postponed due to COVID-19.

Orchestrated by the township, the better-late-than-never Roxbury Community Clean Up Day will take place Oct. 24.

“Under the reign of COVID-19 our voluntary spring cleanup was canceled, so litter has been accumulating and growing undisturbed throughout town and it’s starting to show” said Roxbury Clean Communities Coordinator Kellie Ann Keyes in a statement.

The day of community pride volunteerism will begin at 9 a.m. at 96 Dell Ave. in Kenvil, the home of the Roxbury Department of Public Works (DPW).

Participants will be given instructions and assignments based on age and safety, said the township.

“Bags, gloves, vests, litter grabbers (while supplies last) and water to refill your re-useable water bottle will be provided,” it added. Free coverings will be offered until the township’s supply is exhausted.

“Our cleanup day is socially-distanced, self-guided volunteer opportunity for individuals, residents, businesses and groups to work together to help clean up parks, trails, woodlands, roadsides, neighborhoods and waterways,” the township said. “The event is a great way to spend time outdoors to pick up litter before it is covered with leaves and snow, stopping the debris from ending up in storm drains and waterways.”

Most participants will be done by 11 a.m., said the township. It noted it is open to suggestions from residents about places in need of litter removal.

“After postponing last spring’s Roxbury Community Clean Up Day due to COVID-19, we are encouraging residents to help beautify our community,” the township said, noting that the event is open to people of all ages.

Those who want to join must register ahead of time. To do so, email keyesk@roxburynj.us or call 973-448-2053.

People who want to help remove litter but can’t do it on Oct. 24 are asked to contact the township, which said alternative dates for their participation might be available.
