Ryan Burns Exhibit Scheduled at Drew U. Korn Gallery in February

The Korn Gallery is pleased to announce the exhibition, “Climate Proxies” by Ryan Burns, on view Feb. 4 through March 5.  The Gallery is located in the Dorothy Young Center for the Arts at Drew University and is open Tuesday through Friday 12:30 to 4 p.m., selected weekends and by appointment.

Burns is an artist who has been working professionally for 20 years. He has produced a body of work including painting, drawing, sculpture and collage. His “Climate Proxies” exhibition is part of a project entitled *Biodiscourse*, an on-going series of old-growth tree stump rubbings on collage. The project documents the annihilation of ancient forest habitat and to spark conversation on the mutualistic, mycorrhizal networks that sustain all forms of life. The rubbings are reminiscent of gravestone rubbings that document the growth rings of ancient trees and hold the narrative thread to centuries of dendroclimatology.

The role of deforestation and fossil fuel emissions in climate change is addressed by the mode through which he accesses remote wilderness to make the rubbings; he converted a decommissioned ambulance to run on waste restaurant oil. The emergency vehicle serves as a metaphor for extermination of these richly bio-diverse, rapidly disappearing ancient forest biomes.
