S. Plainfield Tops Gov. Livingston Girls Basketball, 52-44, in First Round of the NJSIAA Tournament

SOUTH PLAINFIELD, NJ - Gov. Livingston girls basketball saw its season end on Tuesday, falling to S. Plainfield, 52-44, in the first round of the NJSIAA State Sectional Tournament (North 2, Group 3) at S. Plainfield High School.  

The S. Plainfield gym electricfied as senior Kate McLaughlin led the Tigers with 16 points scoring her 1,000 career point early in the first quarter.  S. Plainfield  took early control of the game leading 10-3. 

The Lady Highlanders added defensive pressure with pokes and steals, shifting momentum with a 3-pointer by Senior Patrice DiTommaso.  Hayley Berliner sank a shot at the buzzer to give GL their only lead of the game going into the second quarter, 12-10.

S. Plainfeld held GL to four  points in the second, hitting two-three pointers to lead 26-10 at half-time.

Junior Sara Dilly led the Highlanders with 13 points, opening and closing the third quarter making shots to narrow the Tiger's lead.

Both sides fought with a tight defense, trading baskets throughout the second half.

GL found the net with another 3-pointer by Berliner.  But it was McLaughlin's night as she answered with two 3-pointers for S. Plainfield, to lead by 8 going into the final quarter.  

GL senior Jenny Pires fought for steals, sinking a lay-up for 7 points in the game and Katie Rielly added two.

Late in the game fouls and a technical called on GL gave S. Plainfield the edge in the victory advancing them to the second round.
