SUMMIT, NJ - Valairco Heating and Cooling presented SAGE Eldercare a $500 donation as part of their Valairco Cares program. Valairco President Kevin McHugh and founder Richard Valenti presented their 9th Valairco Cares giveaway to Marianne Kranz, Meals On Wheels Director and Amy Stuart, Community Program and Volunteer Coordinator.
SAGE Eldercare in Summit is committed to being the leading provider of programs and services to meet the changing needs of older adults, their families, and caregivers. Click here to learn more about their services.
Since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, SAGE Meals on Wheels never shut down, said Stuart. "We kept going -- we didn't miss one day. It was scary -- but we kept on. We had a huge surge in Meals on Wheels clients at the onset of the pandemic. -- Some people now have gone off the program, but we definitely expect it to pick up again when the weather gets cold."
SAGE Meals on Wheels services the Summit community and surrounding towns of Springfield, New Providence, Berkeley Heights, Mountainside, Milburn, Short Hills and Chatham. The deliveries are made by a group of "hardcore" volunteers of all ages. They have "stuck by us since day one [of the pandemic]," said Stuart. Due to the abundance of precautions, there is no contact or social interaction between the volunteers and clients. "It's hard for the clients and for the volunteers because there's no social interaction for them -- and that's 50 percent of what a lot of our clients are looking for. Somebody to come in and chat and talk."
In addition to Meals on Wheels, SAGE is also taking grocery shopping clients. "Nobody is going hungry on our watch," said Stuart.
Their Spend-A-Day program remains temporarily closed due to the pandemic. However, SAGE is providing a telehealth program to support participants and caregivers. Weekly phone calls allow participants to hear a familiar voice and connect and caregivers get a chance to voice their concerns to someone who understands. Caregivers and participants also appreciate the weekly emails from the Spend-A-Day team, which provide helpful ideas and things to do.
Thanks to the generosity of the community, grant money, and donors like Valairco, SAGE has been managing well through the pandemic.
"Since Covid-19 began, we've had an outpouring of community support. The acts of kindness, big and small, make a huge difference in the life of an isolated and frightened older adult. Half of our clients live alone and 65% rarely see anyone other than their volunteer. We are so appreciative for the support of so many during this challenging time and we thank you," SAGE Eldercare reported.
