TheFanny Wood Day Committee is proud to announce that musical entertainment will abound at the 16th Annual Fanny Wood Day slated to be held on Sunday, October 2nd from 11:00 to 5:00 p.m.
Two new unique, local youth groups will be featured starting with performances by the “School of Rock.” The School’s musical director, Art Lima, indicated that the School of Rock “provides opportunities not just for kids to learn the classic material and techniques of rock and roll, but also provides them with fantastic lessons in problem solving, team building, and the rewards of hard work while building their self-esteem and confidence (all while having a blast). The School of Rock experience creates not only rock stars on stage, but it transfers into other areas of the kids’ lives as well!”
The SoR musicians will perform two sets, kicking off at 1:00 p.m. and returning for a second set at 3:00 p.m.
Live music is a large part of Fanny Wood Day, and the Scotch Plains-Fanwood High School’s “Cabaret Troupe” is a student-run club consisting of talented teenagers from SPFHS’ award-winning vocal programs. The group was founded to give local singers the opportunity to perform songs of their choosing through community service performances.
Selections range from Broadway show tunes and songs from the Great American Songbook to current pop hits. Performing on Fanny Wood Day will be “Cab Troupe” members Julie Busch, Varshini Narayanan, Paige Mankin, Julia Mendes, Kayla Spector and Rachel Naugle. They will be accompanied on keyboards by Brynne Bartiromo.
The group has previously performed at The Chelsea of Fanwood, Sunrise Assisted Living Facility in Westfield, The Fanwood Memorial Library, The Scotch Plains Library and Scotch Plains-Fanwood High School. Their 30 minute performance is scheduled to begin at 2:00 p.m.
In addition, a number of Fanwood residents are donating their talents to entertain young and old alike. Peter Juris will perform a variety of activities atop his 5 foot high stilts, and perform a variety of magic tricks. There will also be a caricaturist who will sketch portraits of family members in front of the stage area and of course there will be a variety of fun games and other entertainment provided by our many vendors.
Fanny Wood Day will be held at the corner of Martine and South Avenues in downtown Fanwood and will feature an array of contests, vendors, and children’s amusements. Supported by local vendors the children’s area is available for one all day price of $10.
“In these challenging economic times we are proud to be able to put on a local, fun filled event that is reasonably priced for families and friends,” stated Mayor Colleen Mahr. “Our entertainment this year, consist of extremely talented, local musicians, who are all donating their time and talent to make this a great and successful event.” Hopefully, we will see some of these young people as “stars” in the future who got their start at Fanny Wood Day.”
“Our hard working committee comprised of Donna Dolce, Lynn Sorf, Bruce Zakarin, David Bleckinger, Tony Parenti, Lou Schults, Jason Parker, Steven Parker, Don Wussler and Kristen Dinegar have done an extraordinary job putting together this year’s event!” commented Mahr.
