SCOTCH PLAINS/FANWOOD, NJ - Justin Rodriquez and Christian Isolda each scored two goals for Scotch Plains-Fanwood in an 8-1 victory over Cranford on Thursday. For Isolda, they were the first two goals of his varsity career.
“It felt good getting my first goal. There is no feeling like watching the ball hit the net and celebrating with your teammates,” said Isolda. The win for the Raiders came after a heart breaking loss to Bridgewater-Raritan on Saturday.
“After the loss to Bridgewater, we changed up our formation and warm ups. We have more losses this year than we did last season and we needed to switch it up,” said Isolda.
The Raiders set the tone early when Rodriquez scored in the fifth minute for the Raiders off the assist from James Murphy. In the 14th minute, Rodriquez scored his second goals of the game off an assist from Zach Lipshitz. This gave the Raiders a 2-0 lead within the first 14 minutes of the game.
Devin Glover added another goal in the 23rd minute when the goalie for Cranford came out of the box to recover the ball but failed. Scotch Plains-Fanwood kept the scoring up when Murphy rocketed a ball past the goalie in the 38th minute to give the Raiders a 4-0 lead at halftime.
“Cranford did a lot of offside trapping which made it easier to put the ball over the top,” said Rodriquez.
In the second half, Isolda scored in the 41st minute of the game for his first varsity goal. Three minutes later, he added his second of the game and increased the lead for Scotch Plains to 6-0. Mike Walsh became the fourth SPF player to score a goal in the game when he scored in the 48th minute off Murphy’s second assist of the game.
Cranford got their first goal of the game in the 53rd minute to make the score 7-1. Brian Rubin scored the last time for the Raiders in the 63rd minute off the assist from Dan Babis making the final score 8-1.
