SCOTCH PLAINS/FANWOOD, NJ -- The Scotch Plains Fanwood Baseball League (SPFBL) opened its 2014 season on Saturday April 12 under warm sunny skies – a welcome sight after a long, cold winter.

Players ranging from Tee Ball through the Majors division marched from Valley Road into Booth Field, home of SPFBL.  SPFBL President Neil Kaufman explained why Opening Day is a highlight of the year:

The league handed out a number of awards at the ceremony.  The winners were:

  • Spencer Moran, winner of the David M. Ferro Sportsmanship Award (Majors Division)
  • Connor Walsh, winner of the James P. O'Brien Sportsmanship Award (Senior Division)
  • Frank DiNizo, winner of the James R. Sochan MVP Award (Senior Division)
  • Rich Duthie, winner of the Tom Paterson Distinguished Service Award
  • Sponsor of the Year Award: Modell's
  • Sponsor of the Year Award: Darby Road

The Scotch Plains Fanwood Baseball League (SPFBL) is a private, non-profit organization providing baseball opportunities to the youth of Scotch Plains and Fanwood ages 5 to 18. The league is the product of the merger of Scotch Plains-Fanwood Youth Baseball Association (SPFYBA), formed in 1955, and FYO (Fanwood Youth Organization) Baseball League, formed in 1961.
