SCOTCH PLAINS, NJ -- The Scotch Plains Fanwood Chess Club held its official K-12 Scholastic Chess Tournament on Sunday at the historic Shady Rest Clubhouse at Scotch Hills Country Club.
The opening ceremony was led by Scotch Plains Town Manager Al Mirabella, who delivered the welcome address and provided the tournament participants with a warm introduction to Scotch Plains and a quick narration of the rich history of Scotch Plains and the Shady Rest. He also provided many words of encouragement to all tournament participants.
At the conclusion of the tournament, Trophies were awarded for 1st thru 3rd Place finishers in each section. There were also medals for all tournament participants.
Founded by Alfonse Akins, the Scotch Plains-Fanwood Chess Club has been operating with the support of the Scotch Plains Parks and Recreation Department and the Scotch Plains Public Library since January 2017 with lead instructor Errol Singh. The club meets at the Scotch Plains Library every other Wednesday from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m.
