SCOTCH PLAINS, NJ - The Scotch Plains-Fanwood girls soccer team defeated Millburn, 3-0, on Thursday at Wexler field to advance to the state sectional semifinals.
Top-seeded SPF was carried by an early goal by Kelly Yeager and two Kathryn Cunningham goals. Yeager scored off of an assist by Tori Baliatico in the first five minutes of the game to give SPF the early 1-0 lead.
“That first goal gave us confidence and showed us that we are capable of doing anything we set our minds to,” said Yeager.
Later in the half, Cunningham fired a shot towards the Millburn goalie, who made what seemed to be a routine save. However, the referee called the shot a goal, for he saw the ball fully cross the line before it made it into the keeper’s hands.
The third and final goal of the game came off of a penalty kick made by Cunningham. The penalty kick was awarded after a foul in the box.
SPF has shut out both of their opponents in the sectional tournament and have scored a combined seven goals.
“We have worked at playing as a team and passing it to the feet as well as looking for the through passes and getting it up the field together,” Baliatico said.
SPF looks to continue its run at a sectional championship in the semifinal on Monday against Bridgewater-Raritan at Wexler field.
