CHATHAM, NJ - Sean Smiley became a second generation Chatham Borough Volunteer Firefighter when he was sworn in as a probationary firefighter on Monday night at the Borough of Chatham Council meeting.
The 19-year-old student at Coastal Carolina follows in the footsteps of his father, Steve, who has been a Chatham Borough firefighter since 1994.
"At an early age he showed interest and I thought eventually he'd join," Steve Smiley said. "It's something he's even thinking about doing professionally down the road. I'm very happy."
The younger Smiley joined the Chatham Junior Fireman's Auxiliary Company on June 27, 2016. He recently completed the five-week course to receive his certification. He joins the Chatham Borough Volunteer Fire Department's Hook and Ladd Company.
"My father had always been a firefighter as I was growing up and it was a dream of mine to join," Smiley said.
