Search Enters Day 5 For Missing Man David Bird; Public Can Help By Sharing Information

MILLINGTON, NJ -  The search for David Bird entered its 5th day today. Search and investigative teams continue their efforts with personnel from the Morris County Prosecutors Office and the New Jersey State Police  helping with both search and investigative efforts. Long Hill Police Chief Mazzeo held a comprehensive search/investigative meeting this morning in the EOC with his investigative team.

Long Hill Township Police thank the public for great leads generated by a commitment to sharing information with family and friends and want to assure the public that everything related to a missing person investigation that can be done is being done with assets from local, county, state resources. While they appreciate all the offers of help, at this time, they do not have a specific need.

Investigative efforts continue to progress with a large amount of investigators in the field running down leads as well as conducting other investigative functions. The EOC is staffed to take any calls regarding leads or sightings. The phone number is (908) 647-1800, Option 1, Ext. 236.

Bird is approximately 6'1 and 200 pounds with short gray hair, blue eyes, a beard and glasses. He has been mssing since approximately 4:30 p .m. on Jan.11 when he went out for a walk wearing a red hooded sweatshirt with yellow zippers and blue jeans.

 

It is thought he was going for a walk behind Millington School at Hick's Track. Neighboring communites, especially Warren Township and BernardsTownship, are asked  to share this information with friends and family and check outbuildings for any sign of Bird. Information and two sightings in Warren Township and Bernards Township  suggest Bird may be walking in the area of Bernards Township, Warren Township and Long Hill Township. A person matching his description was seen by two different people in two different locations in the area of King George Road in Basking Ridge and Warren Township.

Morris County Park Police are searching the area on horseback and with ATVs, and the Morris County Sherriff’s Office is searching with canine units and ATVs. The New Jersey State Police Aviation Unit is also assisting with helicopters

Police ask residents in the area to check their properties for any unusual activity, including checking enclosed areas such as garages, boats, sheds, and cars. In addition, the Investigative Team in Long Hill Twp. has requested that all businesses and residents in Millington, Basking Ridge, and Warren Township check their home and business security surveillance videos for any evidence that missng man David Bird walked past their house or business. 

 

Bird was last seen wearing a distinct bright red jacket. He is an avid walker and distance runner. There is a possibility due to a medical condition that he may be disoriented or confused. He s not dangerous.

The Investigative Team in Long Hill Twp. has requested that all businesses and residents in Millington, Basking Ridge, and Warren Township check their home and business security surveillance videos for any evidence that missng man David Bird walked past their house or business.

 

The community gathered for a vigil on Monday night.Hundreds attended a candlelit prayer service for David Bird on Monday night at All Saints Episcopal Church. As the crowd lit their candles, they sang, "This Little Light of Mine."

 
All Saints rector,Rev. Victoria McGrath, led the service by first thanking all of the rescue workers and volunteers.McGrath said," the Birds are a part of our community, and David is chairman of the Boy Scout troop we sponsor." Two of the Boy Scouts did readings at the service.
 
She said, coming together is a way to focus all the thoughts and prayers and bring the community together, making each individual prayer stronger and giving each other strength.
