KEARNY, NJ — When Marcus Vegas graduated from college with a degree in sports management and a part-time gig as a bank teller, he took on another job as a seasonal Amazon delivery driver anticipating it would be temporary.

Two years later, Vegas, a Kearny resident, is thriving like he never imagined. Along with 2,300 other Amazon employees in New Jersey this year, Vegas has received multiple promotions and continues to find success at the provider of the world’s largest online marketplace.

“I was a typical college graduate, still looking for what to do after college,” Vegas said. “The opportunities here were endless, and so was the support. I had a lot of guidance from leadership here and people above me who believed in me.”

Just about a year into his tenure at Amazon, Vegas now heads two locations in Kearny and West Caldwell as an Operations Manager. Nationwide, 35,000 other employees like Vegas were offered promotions this year, many of them starting in seasonal roles.

In preparation for the holiday season, Amazon is adding 9,500 new seasonal roles in New Jersey in addition to regular part-time and full-time positions. Many of the opportunities include pay incentives, benefits, and, for individuals looking to advance their careers, plenty of room to grow.

Amazon’s positions start at $15 an hour, and employees can take advantage of the Amazon Career Choice Program, which pre-pays 95% of tuition and fees for certifications and associates degrees.

“The opportunities are definitely there and I’m truthfully a living example of it,” Vegas added.
