Looking in the mirror

I see Spite in the mass, giving me that look.

Fear, mulling itself over, watching

Emotion hold on for dear life.

Night’s long abandoned Day at sea

But he doesn’t quite remember that.

Regret kneels and prays, as Satan dances at the fire;

Hope lies, a cold heap, with Tears standing over him.

Next door, Bitterness bites the wind’s dust

Old Wishes chained to the forevermore

Playing tunes unheard in the vacuum.

Over that crest

Doubt turns in my hair, raided by devils of the night;

Envy spreads across the whole of it, whilst

Pain reaps its pay with a ‘How d’you do.’

And the most curious thing,

The blackest and most terrifying thing:

Antipathy whispers the miserable truth, that

I will always host these demons.

And as if to respond

A heart

once living, once loving

now somewhere over there

hiding in the corner draws up its knees a little more.

That is what I see.

The Millburn High School Literary Magazine, Word, is a juried publication that showcases the extraordinary talents of this school's writers, artists, photographers, craftspeople and illustrators. The editors and staff take the process of creating the magazine very seriously. We hold regular open meetings from September to February to read submissions and to identify potential pieces for inclusion in the next volume. Then we choose selections that exemplify the diversity and strength of our student body and spend several months working on a unifying theme, on layout and production. Since we are constantly amazed by the abilities of our peers, we consider the magazine a tribute to the virtuosity, skill and creativity of our student body.
