MAPLEWOOD, NJ - The Seth Boyden Elementary School PTA is currently raising money to complete the construction of the school district's first free-standing outdoor classroom. The Outdoor Learning Pavilion will serve as a classroom, performance venue and meeting place. The space will promote environmental education and enable teachers to bring their lessons outdoors.
"After many years of working with the Seth Boyden extended family, we have made great progress in making better use of our extensive grounds in order to enhance the educational and recreational experiences of our students,” said Susie Adamson of the Seth Boyden PTA. “This Outdoor Classroom will continue these plans - providing an exceptional learning space for teachers and children - to further bring to fruition our efforts to educate children in creative and engaging ways that appeal to a variety of senses and ways of learning.”
The Maplewood/South Orange Board of Education has already approved the plans and the school is expecting State approval soon. A new fundraising effort - working with the new locally-started crowdsourcing service, umojawa – is now under way.
“We hope that our neighbors from all around Maplewood, South Orange, and beyond will see the importance of joining with us in this endeavor,” said Adamson. “It can only benefit all of us as we raise up generations of extra-ordinary kids."
Architect and Seth Boyden parent Huzefa Irfani has donated his services and time to make this concept a reality. The new fundraising goal is $20,000, and all gifts are tax-deductable. For gifts of $100 or more, they will engrave a brick in your name, your child’s name or in honor of a loved one.
