WEST ORANGE, NJ – The Seton Hall Prep Pirates are now 5-0 after defeating the West Orange High School Mountaineers by a score of 38-14 at Suriano Stadium in West Orange Saturday afternoon.
The Pirates jumped out to an early lead, scoring on their opening drive which finished with a 19-yard touchdown run by junior running back Nasir Austin. Paye would finish the game with 165 yards rushing and two touchdowns for West Orange.
Pirates quarterback Peter Burkly got to work in the second quarter, connecting with senior Clay Austin on a 23 yard touchdown pass on a seam route to the back of the endzone. On the next possession, Burkly hit senior Kevin Taylor for a 64 yard touchdown with only 32 seconds left in the first half.
With West Orange down 21-7 at the half, the Mountaineers’ award-winning Marching Band and Colorguard took the field. After a stellar performance, it was time for the highly anticipated Homecoming King and Queen to be crowned. After tallying the votes of their fellow classmates, the title of Homecoming King went to Harry Kaplan and Homecoming Queen was given to Ginny Jean. The halftime show concluded with a performance by the acclaimed WOHS Varsity Cheerleading Squad. The Mountaineers and Pirates also wore pink socks and accessories to raise awareness for Breast Cancer.
The Mountaineers struggled in the second half after a first-possession fumble led to a Seton Hall Prep touchdown run by sophomore Julian Spain. The Pirates continued to dominate the half by adding a 24 yard field goal by sophomore kicker Ryan McSherry and a 60-yard touchdown run by Kevin Taylor. McSherry, who was also perfect on his previous four attempts, tacked on the extra point stretching the lead to 38-7.
West Orange, desperate for some offense, found the endzone late in the fourth quarter on a one yard score by Paye. Senior quarterback Brandon Cowley was held to just 7 completions for 104 yards for West Orange.
The Pirates look to continue their undefeated season with a home game against Columbia on Friday, Oct. 12, at 7p.m. The Mountaineers will hope to bounce back against Nutley on Saturday, Oct. 13, with a 1p.m. start in West Orange.
