FAIRFIELD, NJ – Sheriff Armando Fontoura is a well-known figure around town, and highly respected by his neighbors and the West Essex Community.
Annually, Sheriff Fontoura and his department take on the enormous project of pulling together a Thanksgiving Food Drive for those in need throughout Essex County.
Yesterday, Tuesday, November 20th, the Sheriff along with his officers completely loaded two vans full of hundreds of turkeys and holiday meals and delivered them to the needy throughout Essex County.
“In the wake of Hurricane Sandy, many of our neighbors are still hurting,” Fontoura noted. “The loss of electrical power for many days caused an awful lot of food to go bad. In some small way, our food drive will assist families and community soup kitchens.”
What the Sheriff may consider a “small way” of helping is actually expected to assist hundreds in receiving a delicious meal on Thanksgiving Day.
Shelves and food pantries were stocked and filled at these Newark locations:
* St. Rocco’s
* St. Ann’s Church
* The Salvation Army
* New Hope Baptist Church
* St. John’s Soup Kitchen
* 14th Avenue School
* Independence Park Senior Citizens Monday Club
* Safe House for Battered Spouses and Children
* La Casa de Don Pedro
* 1060 Broad Street Senior Citizen’s Complex
* Casa Israel Adult Medical Daycare
* First Hopewell Missionary Baptist Church
* Babyland Family Services
* Hawkins Street School
* Iglesia Cristiana Emanuel Church
“Our annual program goes well beyond Thanksgiving Day,” Sheriff Fontoura added.
“The food our officers, deputies and civilian staff donate will also assist many of our local food pantries through the winter months.”
James Matarazzo, the former Mayor of North Caldwell commented, "the Sherrif is a great guy, always has been. He has a heart of gold."
The Sheriff’s Department assists with community needs throughout the year. They are already employing their efforts collecting heavy winter clothing, outerwear and boots to be distributed in December during their annual Holiday Gift, Food and Clothing Drive for Needy Families.
“I am extremely proud of the generosity of our officers,” Fontoura pointed out.
“These many community initiatives underscore the esprit de corps of our officers and their care and concern for our neighbors.”
