Shop West Orange on Small Business Saturday

November 29, 2013 at 10:57 PM

WEST ORANGE, NJ -  November 30 is Small Business Saturday across the United States, and it's the perfect opportunity for shoppers exhausted from Black Friday to kick back, shop local, and get some great deals in the process.

From restaurants, diners, and bakeries; from apparel to sporting goods; jewelry and art, local communities are filled with personal service and convenient locations.  Parking meters?  No problem.  Shopping is free during the holidays in West Orange and most other towns.

Hometown local small businesses are the heart and soul of a community.  If the businesses are growing, so is the local economy of that town.  If you go to the West Orange Chamber of Commerce's website, you can get an idea of the variety of West Orange and surrounding businesses available..

For every $100 spent at a local business, it is estimated that $68 goes back into your community.

According to the Small Business Administration's website, American Express began the first Small Business Saturday in 2010, offering incentives at local businesses with the American Express card.  Check out the SBA site and see what local businessess are participating in the American Express program on Saturday.

Which brings us to the West Orange Property Tax Reward Card Program.  The Township began the program on November 1 and cards were mailed to residents.  If you did not receive them, or need more, you can pick them up at Town Hall, 66 Main Street, or go to the website: WO Card

The program is simple for residents.  Homeowners and renters, get your cards.  Register them online.  You're ready to go and get year-round discounts at participating West Orange businesses.

How does this work?  You go to a participating business.  Let's call it the  Shop WoLocal store.  The Shop WoLocal store offers a 10% discount to West Orange residents.  You spend $100 at the store.  You pay the $100 and the store processes your transaction.  $10 will be applied to your account and deducted from your Property Tax bill.  Renters will get a check at the end of the year.

You can log on to view all participating businesses - more are joining each week.

If you are a business, visit the website above to see how you can participate.

Remember, shopping local is good for everyone: homeowners, renters, businesses and the township.  Shop West Orange and Shop Local, and support Small Business Saturday.

Man vs. Waze

A lot of strange cars are traveling through my quiet neighborhood these days.  They are not driven by my neighbors.  Some mornings I even have trouble getting out of my driveway.

Ever since bridge repair closed a major thoroughfare near my house, the traffic on my sleepy street has increased dramatically.  And it is not by accident that commuters have figured out ...
