Smart Job Hunting - Unemployment Crisis

December 28, 2013 at 6:17 PM

With congress not acting to fund the extension of unemployment benefits before going on holiday recess, 1.3 million job seekers were cut off today Dec 28th and this will impact 4.9 million by the end of 2014. Much of the media coverage is shallow and political and economic bias chatter that does not tell the facts and reflect the real numbers of people out of work.

Once you are off UE benefits you do not get counted in the numbers that are always being reported. There are 351,767 people, which is only those who are counted. The true Unemployment rate is running almost double. On a call last week the White House Economic Advisors said that this country as never cut extended benefits when the Lont-Term (official rate) is over 1.0% it is 2.8% nationally. For those who are unemployed here in New Jersey hearing that things are getting better when the (official rate) as  dropped from 8.4 to 7.8 with only 16,900 jobs added from last month, clearly basic math tell us all that many fell off benefits last month which it contributing to the rate drop and not job growth.

As a jobs advocate (www.jobsadvocate.com) I know first hand working with these job seekers that the only solution is to create jobs and change attitudes towards the long-term unemployed.  We have a great group at Neighbors-helping=Neighbors USA where peers and others help our members with getting back to work. We have 360 success stories in just over two years. We soon will celebrate our Three years and counting… on Jan 27th 2014 when we had one meeting group in the River Edge Library and then added the second meeting 6 months later, the rest has been nothing short of amazing, 24 weekly groups.
