BERKELEY HEIGHTS, NJ - The Berkeley Heights YMCA was the recipient of a $2,500 donation from the Smith Chiropractic Foundation. Dr. Patrick Smith presented the check to Summit Area YMCA CEO Paul Kieltyka and Berkeley Heights YMCA Executive Director Tiffany Escott.
Smith, Race Director of the Berkeley Heights 5K, typically presents checks at the annual race held in September. After much consideration, Smith canceled the race due to COVID-19. Since the race's inception in 1996, the event has raised over $237,000 and assisted over 30 local and national charitable organizations. Visit their charities page for a complete list of those who received gifts last year. Kieltyka and Escott were thankful to be a recipient of this generous donation.
COVID-19 struck on the heels of the grand opening celebration of the Summit Area YMCA's brand new 40,000 square foot state-of-the-art facility on Locust Avenue in Berkeley Heights. They were open for about a month before Governor Murphy's executive order placed restrictions and shuttered non-essential businesses to "flatten the curve."
"The YMCA has been partially operational since July and open for daycare," said Escott. They currently hold group exercise and spin classes outside while practicing all safety precautions.
The inside gym has been open to members since September 8 to 25 percent capacity of the stated maximum capacity. When you're in the facility, all members and staff are required to wear a mask.
With guidance from the local and state authorities, the Summit Area YMCA has incorporated numerous new safety measures and cleaning protocols to help keep their members, children and staff safe and healthy.
What you can expect at check-in:
• Members must check-in and checkout to record and maintain accurate building capacity limits.
• Staff will conduct the state mandated health screenings prior to your check-in.
• 6 feet of social distancing from others at all times except when getting your temperature taken by staff.
• Members and staff are required to wear masks at all times in and on YMCA property as per the Governor's Executive Order.
YMCA current schedule: Monday - Friday 6 a.m - 7 p.m.; Saturday and Sunday 7 a.m. - 2 p.m.
