Smoke But No Fire in Scotch Plains-Fanwood

SCOTCH PLAINS/FANWOOD, NJ -- A large brush fire in Wharton State Park in south Jersey brought the smell of smoke across large portions of the Garden State.

The early morning fire was large enough, and the winds strong enough, to reach Scotch Plains-Fanwood and beyond.  Surrounding areas up to New York City and as far south as Philadelphia experienced haze and a burning smell.

Wharton State Forest, which stretches through Atlantic, Burlington and Camden Counties, is the largest single tract of land within the New Jersey State Park System.
