SCOTCH PLAINS, N.J. -- Justina Benvenuto fired a one-hitter and homered to lead the Union Catholic softball team to a 2-0 victory over Dayton on Wednesday.
Benvenuto, a junior who threw a perfect game vs. Rahway earlier this season, carried a perfect game into the seventh inning, but an infield single to leadoff the inning ended her bid. Benvenuto struck out seven and didn't issue any walks.
UC, now 9-12 on the season, took a 1-0 lead in the third inning when Angelia Del Negro led off with single, advance to second on a passed ball, went to third on groundout by Gianna Peralta, and scored on a passed ball.
Benvenuto homered in the fourth inning to close out the scoring. Kaitlyn Dohn continued her breakout season with two of Union Catholic's seven hits.
UC will be back in action on Monday at Pingry at 4 p.m. in the opening round of the South Jersey, Non-Public A State Tournament.
