South Jersey Brush Fire's Scent Reaches into North Jersey

April 7, 2014 at 10:39 AM

MADISON, NJ - A large fire that burned overnight in Wharton State Park in southern New Jersey is the cause of the smoky scent that has been permeating Madison’s air Monday, according to multiple sources.

The fire began Sunday afternoon, according to NBCNewYork.com. NJ.com is reporting that, as of Monday morning, it is only 30 percent contained. Reports of the smoky odor are coming from as far away as Brooklyn and Philadelphia.

"The fire is large enough, and the winds strong enough, and traveling in the right direction that Madison and surrounding areas are experiencing a haze and burning smell," said the Madison Police Department in a statement Monday morning.
