SOUTH ORANGE, NJ - The South Orange Parking Authority recently implemented a "snow route" for the jitney buses to maximize safety for its passengers and to avoid dangerous driving conditions as best as possible.
The changes only affect the Newstead and North Wyoming route and sticks to South Orange Avenue, Wyoming Avenue and Glenview Road, according to Mark Hartwyk, executive director of the Parking Authority .
"If we are able to run the buses, but we can't negotiate the downhill, then we institute the Newstead emergency route," Hartwyk said.
The modified route does not include any slopes or hills in snowy or icy weather conditions.
The jitney will travel up South Orange Avenue to Glenview Road where it will continue until it reaches the South Mountain Annex. After that, it will not make the right turn on Longview Road to Harding Drive, but instead it will turn around and return to South Orange Avenue.
The bus will make a left on Wyoming Avenue and pick up anyone willing to make the walk down to the street. It will continue on Wyoming Avenue until it turns around at Blanchard Road to return to South Orange Avenue. It will not travel down Franklin Terrace, Melrose Place or Ridgewood Road.
A copy of the detailed scheduled will be posted on the village's website.
