SOUTH ORANGE, NJ - An email was sent from the South Orange Maplewood School District (SOMSD) to South Orange Middle School (SOMS) families on Tuesday night with the subject line "Safety Update for May 16 2018."

The email was sent in response to graffiti which "indicated a potential threat for tomorrow, May 16," according to the email, which also stated that the South Orange Police Department found "there is no credible threat" and will continue to investigate the incident. The email also stated that the South Orange Police Department will have an "extra presence" on Wednesday.

Dear South Orange Middle School Families,

This evening, SOMS custodial staff discovered graffiti which indicated a potential threat for tomorrow, May 16, 2018.  The school immediately contacted the South Orange Police Department. 

Although the Police Department’s investigation is still ongoing, they have informed us that there is no credible threat. 

Nevertheless, we intend to take extra precautions tomorrow to ensure the safety and well-being of our school community, and the South Orange Police Department will have an extra presence. 

Thank you to the South Orange Police Department for their prompt assistance in keeping our school and our community safe.
