South Orange Promotes Firefighter, Honors Parking Authority Service

SOUTH ORANGE, NJ – The village promoted Firefighter Peter Scott to the rank of fire captain at the Board of Trustees meeting on Monday night.

Fire Chief Jeff Markey said, “It is my pleasure tonight to make a recommendation to the Board of Trustees to promote Firefighter Scott to captain of the South Orange Fire Department.”

The captain position was left open when Deputy Chief Steve O’Conner retired. Village President Alex Torpey administered the oath of office.

In addition, two former members of the Parking Authority Board of Commissioners were recognized for their service, Susan Severance-Esformes and James Cryan. Severance-Esformes served from 200 to 2013, and Cryan served from 1992 to 2012.

Parking Authority Director Mark Hartwyk presented Cryan with a plaque. Severance-Esformes was unable to attend the meeting. The Parking Authority is seeking volunteers to serve on its board. Residents may submit a volunteer application form online at the village website, contact the village clerk at (973) 378-7715, ext. 1, or email the clerk’s office at clerk@southorange.org.

The Board of Health, the Environmental Commission and the Historic Preservation Commission also have vacancies.

The trustees approved a number of appointments at Monday’s meeting as follows:

  • Rachel Wainer as an alternate on the Board of Health;
  • Larisa Treyster as a member of the Board of Health and of the Citizens Budget Advisory Committee;
  • Kenneth Larivee as a member of the Seton Hall University Partnership Committee;
  • Robert Sandow as a member of the Citizens Budget Advisory Committee.

In addition, Torpey appointed Neil Chambers as an alternate on the South Orange Environmental Commission.
