South Orange Public Library Launches Summer Reading Program

SOUTH ORANGE, NJ – The South Orange Public Library is kicking off its Summer Reading Program for all ages on Monday, June 30, at 11 a.m.  Sign-ups begin Thursday, June 26, at the Library and continue for the duration of the summer.

Opening Day festivities will include live music, arts and crafts, gardening in the Library garden, and a magician.  There will be fun activities for the whole family.

Last year, the program had more than 1,000 participants and they read more than 7,000 books, according to Beth Halliday, Head of Children’s Services.

“Participants may read whatever books they want, in any format,” said Keisha Miller, Teen Librarian and Volunteer Coordinator.  Participants have the opportunity to win prizes donated by local merchants.  “We encourage families to come in and participate together.”  This year’s theme for kids is “Fizz Boom Read,” and for teens (grades 6-12), it is “Spark a Reaction.”

The Summer Reading Program will also feature programs such as Family Monday Nights, which is sponsored by the Friends of the South Orange Public Library.  New this year for all age groups is Tech Tuesdays, which will feature instruction in digital photography, video editing, Google Sketch-Up and use of the 3-D printer.  Later this summer, The Shakespeare Theater of New Jersey will be performing “A Mid Summer Night’s Dream.

“This year, we are have Summer Reading for adults as well,” said Library Director Melissa Kopecky.  This new twist will allow parents to participate along with their children.  Adults will submit lists of books they are reading and will be entered into a drawing to win prizes.

A new addition to the library collection are science kits called “Take-a-SEAT,” with SEAT standing for science, exploration, art and technology.  These kits include e-book readers, video, audio, children’s tablets and backpacks filled with ways to entertain children.  The kits are available for use by South Orange Library Card holders.

Volunteers are also needed to help with the Summer Reading Program, and applications are being accepted at the Library.

The South Orange Public Library is located at 65 Scotland Road; 973-762-0230;
