July 2, 2014 at 12:00 AM

South Plainfield Public Library has three book clubs for adults.  The first is the Tuesday Book Club which meets on the second Tuesday at 4 PM each month.  Their next two books are the Shanghai Girls by Lisa See (July 8th) and Life and Times of the Thunderbolt Kid: a Memoir by Bill Bryson (August 12th).

The Mystery Book Club meets on the third Wednesday of the month.  The first two books for the upcoming year will be Josephine Tey’s Daughter of Time (September 17th) and Death of a Political Plant by Ann Ripley (October 15th).  The Club meets at 4PM here at the Library.

The Thursday Night Book Club meets at 7PM.  The first two books they are reading are the Perfume Collector by Kathleen Tessaro (September 25th) and Orange is the New Black by Piper Kerman (October 23rd).  The latter is the story behind the successful television show for which we have the DVDs.

All the Clubs are open to everyone and there is no registration required. Also the Library makes every attempt to have sufficient copies for all participants so all you need to do is stop at the Circulation Desk and they will check out a copy of the book to you.

There is another adult program we have this summer and that is the Adult Summer Reading Club.  All you need to do is sign up at the Circulation Desk where you will receive your first prizes for registering.  As you fill your book up you will win additional prizes and after having read five books you can begin entering the raffle for the grand prizes.  The Club will run through September 20th because we understand that many adults are pressed for time over the summer between children, vacations, etc.  And you can register over the phone and come into pick up your booklet and prizes at any time.

Of course we also have Summer Reading Programs for children and young adults.  You need to come in and register for them in the Library and again the participants can win weekly prizes and for Young Adults they can enter a raffle to win bigger prizes.

Next Tuesday, July 8th, there will be a Sing Along with Mr. Scott at the South Plainfield Senior Center at 90 Maple Ave (The intersection of Plainfield and Maple Avenues). Miss Linda and Miss Mija have their usual story and craft times.  For ages 3 and up they are Tuesday at 10:30AM, Wednesday at 6:30PM, and Thursday at 1:15PM.  Time for 2s and 3s are Wednesday and Thursday at 10:30AM, and there are two Babytime sessions on Friday.  The first is for non-walkers at 10:15AM and for walkers at 11:15.  There is no registration for these programs and they are open to all. We also have Chess Club at 4PM on Tuesdays during the summer but this Club does require registration. There is also Tuesday Tales for ages 7 and up at 1:30PM on Tuesdays.   And a Pokemon Club at 2PM on Fridays.  Finally Miss Mija is continuing Friday Fun for ages 7 and up from 3PM-5PM on Fridays.

Falling by Jane Green (Berkley, 2016)

Every now and again I just love a mindless romance novel, and I've been a huge fan of Jane Green's since her first book, Jemima J: A Novel About Ugly Ducklings and Swans. Despite being classified as “chick lit,” the character and plot of Jemima J. has stayed with me for sixteen years after first reading it because the story ...

The Mommy’s Review - Hidden Figures

The new movie Hidden Figures is now open in theaters nationwide, and I urge all parents out there to take your children to see it. It is a wonderful film with a wonderful message, not to mention a great endorsement of all things related to STEM.

Hidden Figures brings us to Langley, VA in the 1960s, just as NASA is preparing to launch its first Americans off of the planet and into the unknown.
