METUCHEN, NJ – South Plainfield Tigers’ freshman Katherine Vill allowed just two hits and two walks over seven innings while striking out nine batters, to help South Plainfield defeat Metuchen 4-0. The victory improves South Plainfield’s record to 17-4 on the season.
South Plainfield scored its first run of the game in the top half of the first inning, when red-hot Holly DeLair tripled and scored on Caroline Ratti’s grounded out. The game remained scoreless until the fifth inning when South Plainfield scored three runs to take a 4-0 lead over Metuchen.
Gina Tartza got the Tiger offense going with a pinch hit double to leftfield. Caity Hughes bunted for a base hit to put runners on the corners and Caroline Ratti singled to score Naomi Neives. Nieves had re-entered the game for Tartza. Haley Hlavka singled to center to score Caity Hughes and Shannon Hughes had a sacrifice fly to score Ratti.
This would be all the scoring Vill would need. The freshman stayed ahead of the Metuchen’s hitters all game long and improved her record to 15-4 on the season.
