South Plainfield Tigers Outlast Colonia 3-2

SOUTH PLAINFIELD, NJ – South Plainfield freshman Caity Hughes scored the winning run in the bottom half of the eighth inning, to break a 2-2 tie, to give the Tigers a 3-2 victory over Colonia.  Hughes led off the inning with a triple and scored on a ball hit by Haley Hlavka that was misplayed in the field.  Hughes was 3 for 4 on the day with a run scored.

South Plainfield trailed most of the game after Colonia scored two unearned runs in the top half of the second inning.  South Plainfield’s Meghan Hughes doubled and scored in the second inning, and the game remained 2-1 until the sixth inning.  South Plainfield’s Caroline Ratti hit a solo homerun to knot the game at 2-2.

South Plainfield’s Katherine Vill collected the win, and improved her record to 11-3 on the season.  Vill struck out eight and allowed just two unearned runs over eight innings.  The victory improves South Plainfield’s record to 12-3 on the season and Colonia drops to 10-7 on the season.
