SOUTH PLAINFIELD, NJ – The South Plainfield Tigers Wrestling Team defeated Voorhees 30-24 to advance to the North 2, Group 2 sectional finals in the NJSIAA State Tournament. The Tigers will be taking on Hanover Park who defeated Cranford 41-22. The Tigers were the number two seed entering the Tournament and Hanover Park is ranked number one. The match is scheduled for Friday evening weather permitting.
The Tigers won eight of the 14 matches against Voorhees. The Tigers had two matches that were won in overtime. A loss in either of these matches could have flipped the overall winner of the semi-final match. South Plainfield’s Lucio Avelar defeated Voorhees’ Derek Howarth 3-1 in overtime, and South Plainfield’s Jordan Handwerger defeated Voorhees’ Devan Thomas in overtime by the same 3-1 total. With the match in hand South Plainfield forfeit the 182 pound match.
South Plainfield Head Coach Kevin McCann had this to say about the semi-final victory over Voorhees “Walsh had a huge win for us tonight. Walsh, Handwerger and Avelar winning those close ones was key. We need to win those types of matches the rest of the way in order for us to win the Group.”
