South Plainfield’s Downes and Virginia Cavaliers to Play for College World Series Title

South Plainfield's Brandon Downes wil be patroling centerfield for the Virginia Cavaliers this Monday evening in the College World Series Finals.

OMAHA -The University of Virginia Cavaliers defeated Ole Miss, 4-1, yesterday to advance to the College World Series finals against Vanderbilt.  Virginia defeated Ole Miss in the NCAA Tournament for the second time. The game was a resumption of Friday evening’s game, which was suspended in the second inning due to thunderstorms.

South Plainfield’s Brandon Downes is Virginia’s starting center fielder. Downes was 2-for-4 with a run scored. The Cavaliers’ Josh Sborz got the victory, and Nick Howard picked up his 20th save of the year. Virginia has never won a College World Series title, and Downes’ is the first South Plainfield resident to ever play for a College World Series Title.

The College World Series Finals is a best-of-three game series. Game One is Monday evening at 8 p.m. on ESPN.
