STAFFORD — The Southern Rams football team defeated Pinelands 36-15 in the Battle of the Border Thanksgiving Game on Wednesday night in Manahawkin.
All high school administrators, coaches and athletes must be congratulated for pulling off a successful season in the midst of this crazy Covid-19 pandemic. Congratulations to all.
Solid Season for the Rams
The Rams had a solid season and lost a few tight heartbreakers. The Rams were ranked in the Shore Sports Network Top Ten all season and that was well deserved and needs to be applauded.
The Rams started the season 3-0 with impressive victories over Brick 36-20, Brick Memorial 28-13 and Toms River North 48-14.
In week four the Rams ran lost a tough 15-12 contest to Toms River South. That was followed with the Rams took on the No. 2 ranked Donovan Catholic in week five. They lost by a touchdown 21-14.
Week six the Rams rebounded and defeated Central 25-0. The Rams lost 38-35 to Freehold Borough on Nov. 14 and followed that with another tight loss to No. 6 Colts Neck 17-14. The Rams found themselves at 4-4 before Thanksgiving Eve victory over Pinelands.
The stats are impressive. Southern lost 4 games by a total of 16 points!
The Rams competed against the strongest competition in the Shore Conference and the players and coaches have much to be proud of.
In 2021, the Rams return school record setter Jaiden Brown for his senior season. All can be optimistic that 2021 has great potential for success.
Back to Wednesday night. Southern was led by Nick Fabrizzio, who scored two touchdowns and gained over 100 yards. Fabrizzio, who was voted his team’s MVP put the game out of reach when he bursted for 54 yards in the second quarter. He also ran for another run of 58 yards in the third quarter, to give Southern a 36-7 lead. Fabrizzio finished with 126 yards rushing
Southern QB Taylor Munt threw 2 touchdowns, one for 23 yards to Xavier Hendricks and another 22 yard touchdown pass to Nate Committee. Xavier Hendricks also completed a 34 yard TD pass to Alex Rainone.
The Rams defense was lead by Luke Bruther with an interception and Sean Rowland with a fumble recovery.
Pinelands quarterback Ryan Allen was the game MVP from Pinelandsd.
